Once upon a time, there lived a woman named Jocelyn Brown(hereafter known as Jaye). She attended a small Eastern college called Vassar College. Now, she had a perpetual and very long to-do list, and on this to-do list was "teach self HTML and make web page." Of course, for a year and a half it remained on the to-do list. Then, one evening, inspired by boredom, an upcoming midterm essay, and the conviction that knowing HTML would look good on her rèsumè, she set about learning HTML. Her fingers dashed rapidly acro--
Wait a minute! I don't want you controlling the story anymore! I don't like the way you're telling it. You're making me sound insane!
Um, Jaye, two things. First off, what are you doing here? You said I could tell the story. Second, you *are* insane.
Not the kind of insane you're making me out to be. It's the story of my life, and I want control back.
Well, okay, but can I still hang around?
Seeing as how you sprouted from my head, I don't think I have a choice. But now *you* are in italics...
Sheesh! You are all probably wondering who on earth I am, and what on earth is going on. To the latter question, the answer is simple. I foolishly let my other personality try to tell you about me. Obviously a mistake. The former question is slightly more complicated. I am Jaye, as my other self previously mentioned. I attended Vassar College, where I majored in computer science. At school I was a founding member and officer of Vassar's only science fiction/fantasy/anime/gaming/etc. club, the Nonhuman Student Organization(NSO). I was also involved in Renaissance Singers. Among my many hobbies are reading(yet even more science fiction), writing fiction (No, you cannot see the stories, so don't ask. Besides, didn't the little bit above scare you off?), and collecting quotes(you'll hear more than you could ever want about this shortly). I currently live in New York City. I'm not involved in anything cool there. I have no life.
I am, as anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing me will tell you, a somewhat obsessive soul, and I love to share these obsession with my friends and the rest of the world, and now, I'm sharing them with you. (WOW! That sure was a run on sentence!)
First, I'll share with you my big obsession. Then you can all decide to run away in fear. My serious obsession happens to be quotes and sayings. Ask anyone who knows me. I'm constantly collecting them and spitting them out at inopportune times. It saves me from having to come up with my own witty and insightful comments. Of course, I have my own quotes page, which will show you all the quotes I have found over my brief life. Last Update: 03 March 2002 And if you get through all of that, and still want more, you're a masochist, but besides that, you may want to check out the Quotations Home Page, though it hasn't been updated in a while.
Narbonic! Narbonic is the online comic strip of my friend and former roommate Shaenon. It's a sequel to the strip she drew for the Vassar Miscellany News, The Ratio. Follow Dave, the recent college graduate with a degree in computer science, in his first job at Narbonics Research. Meet Helen B. Narbon, Mad Scientist® and her evil intern Mel Kelly. What other comic strip is based upon evil and a variety of mutant gerbils? It's cool.
The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 Babylon 5 is one of the best science fiction show to come out in a long time. This site has everything you could ever want from a site: episode synopses, analysis of every episode, a myriad of links. The ultimate Babylon 5 site. (And, yes, I know it's been AWOL for a while. It's back now.)
Also go to my Babylon 5 quotes. Shocking!
Alert! The Sci-Fi Channel has created a new Babylon 5 movie, this one telling a Ranger story. Read about it at the official site. The movie was pretty cool. Maybe it'll become a series and I can waste even more time watching TV. Except I don't have cable.
Another obsession, Xena:Warrior Princess. I'm really interested in classical history and mythology, and so enjoy seeing how the show twists these. It has fighting, humorous gods, and LOTS of subtext between the lead characters. What more could you ask for?
For all your Xena updates, go to The Australian Xena Information Page. Most of the information isn't regional. Really. And it's one of the few Xena pages that still updates regularly.
Go to Whoosh, home to the International Association of Xena Studies. It has in-depth (and sometimes quirky) analysis of the show, and a comprehensive episode guide.
And finally, go to my Xena quotes.
Stephen Sondheim Stage I adore theatre in general and musical theatre in particular. Stephen Sondheim has to be one of my favorite people involved in theatre. Visit a page dedicated to this genius who brought us Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Assassins, and other incredible shows. Into the Woods is coming back to Broadway!!!
Comics galore! Well, at least the few that I find worth reading. Narbonic was mentioned above, but I reiterate the need to read it. Another is Foxtrot. Perfect for all age groups. A disturbingly All-American family. Don't all families have a pet iguana? Then we have Dilbert, for all those people who have grown cynical at Corporate America. And hey, the Dilbert page does have a pull-down menu to other comics if these aren't your cup of tea. And finally, read Zits. Laugh at adolescence from a safe distance, like retirement age.
Forget what I said. I was introduced to another cool strip, User Friendly. It's a pure techie geek strip though, so you may not get it if you aren't that kind of a geek.
It's the Muppet Show! Okay, I haven't really found a good comprehensive Muppet site yet(Let me know if you find one.), but since I love the Muppets, they get their own section. I love the Muppets. They adorn my walls, my bed(stuffed animals), my clothing, and my body.(Get those thoughts out of your head right now! I'm talking temporary tattoos.) Kermit's my personal favorite. If you want an idea of my personality, I'm Gonzo with a small nose.
I do have more interests than the ones listed above. I love studying astronomy and astrophysics. Comparative religion fascinates me. I am a sports nut, including a huge baseball and Yankees fan. I obviously enjoy working with computers. I just don't have links for these things right now. (Or the topic in question has no truly cool link.) I lost all my links in an unfortunate and rather dumb accident and don't have them back yet. Maybe I'll find them. Maybe not. If I do, I'll let you know. For now, journey on.
The Vassar College Home Page My college. I liked it there pretty well. Go check out the page.
The Nonhuman Student Organization Vassar's only science fiction/fantasy/anime/gaming/etc. club. I was the group's Chief Misinformation Officer/Ensign Coordinator, known in more sane (boring) groups as Activities Coordinator, for four years. I was also a Founding Parental Unit, meaning I was there from the word go, and helped write the Constitution. Read our newsletters, check out our upcoming events and learn all you ever wanted to know about the organization. The NSO: it's not just activities; it's a state of mind.
Renaissance Singers One of Vassar's multiple a cappella groups. It's co-ed, non-audition, and low pressure. In case you couldn't figure it out, they sing Renaissance period music. Note:this does not mean boring church music.(Which I actually like, but...) For example, they have a bawdy drinking song (or several) that's been sung repeatedly, and is really cool.
Computer Science Department Home Page Seeing as how I'm a major and all, I should probably include a link to the department.
Some of my friends have their own web pages. Even more impressively, their pages have actual content, especially in comparison to mine. Once you've finished perusing my page, support my friends.
I feel I should also mention that all of my friends listed below have given into the urge to have web logs. I would just like to say that should I ever get a web log, I would like you to kill me several times until I am dead (with apologies to L. Frank Baum's ghost).
Paintedhippo.com Home page for my former roommate Keri. She's still working on hers, like me. She'll probably have the links to those cool religion places whose locations escape me.
The Cast Recordings FAQ My friend Mike runs this one, a page about all those bloody cast recordings that I have to listen to on tapes copied from records because no one will release them on CD. Argh! He also has a listing of relevant theatre links. Mike's personal ramblings can be found at epenthesis.org
Blertco My friend Pixel's page. I can't think of how to summarize it. An exercise in randomness, like mine? Who knows? Let me know if you have a description.
Spiced Cocoa for the Soul Once again, Lisa, the English major, puts the rest of us to shame with her webpage. Maybe she's just more artistically inclined than the geeky types. Anyway, check out her page, especially her travelogues, with her pictures of all the cool places she's been, like Oxford. Sigh.
Cinediva.com I give up. I think all of my friends are an exercise in randomness and their web pages reflect that. Here is my friend Cheryl's randomness.
